Start with closing dates rather than the most famous city
If you can only travel after Christmas, the first question is which market will still be operating when you arrive. This selection compares five options with published calendars for the 2026–2027 season. It is a choice of destinations, not an itinerary covering all five: Colmar and Brussels are western alternatives, while Prague, Vienna and Salzburg suit a Central European trip. Open after December 25 does not confirm the schedule on Christmas Day, December 26 or New Year's Eve. Nor does it mean the whole Advent programme continues. Nuremberg, for example, closes its main Christmas market on December 24, so we would leave it out of a later trip focused on festive stalls.
Colmar: choose the earlier dates and check individual areas
Colmar's six main Christmas markets are scheduled from November 23 to December 29, 2026. If they are your priority, arrive with at least one full day before closing rather than relying on the final afternoon after a flight. Official information separately identifies a food market and other installations that continue later; that extension does not keep all six markets open into January. Stay in Colmar for a short break or choose an excursion that clearly states how much free time you will have there. Nearby villages do not necessarily share its calendar. Before adding another stop, check that village's dates and your journey back, including the final connection you are comfortable taking.
Prague: an option when your holiday reaches January
The Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square markets have a published season running from November 28, 2026, to January 6, 2027. That makes them useful when your time off starts at the end of December. Spend one afternoon around both squares and another exploring the city in daylight instead of repeating the same evening circuit. A guided walk can add context if its neighbourhoods and language suit your interests; you do not need to book one simply to approach the stalls. Check restaurants, monuments and public holiday services separately. A market's continuing season does not mean everything around it operates normally. Leave an indoor break between outdoor visits and allow time to return to your accommodation.

Vienna: after December 26, redraw the map around Schönbrunn
Schönbrunn continues until January 6, 2027, whereas the Rathausplatz market ends on December 26 and Karlsplatz on December 23. A late December booking should therefore focus on places that are actually still operating. Do not mistake a continuing ice rink for a continuing market around it. For a comfortable visit, place Schönbrunn and your city walk in separate parts of the day, calculating the journey before adding a concert. Check whether a chosen experience includes palace interiors, a guide or simply a meeting point nearby. Those are different services with different value. A hotel near useful transport may help more than a room beside a market that has already closed for the season.
Salzburg: name the Stern rather than assuming every market remains
The Stern Advent and Winter Market lists its season from November 19, 2026, to January 6, 2027, continuing after Christmas as a winter market. This guide refers to that specific location, not to a common closing date for every Salzburg market. You can combine its stalls with an old town walk without building a day around multiple transfers. If you arrive around New Year's Eve, note the Stern's published 3 pm closing time on December 31. A late dinner will not replace a visit earlier that day. Check your day's hours and plan somewhere indoors to rest between walks, particularly with children or anyone who finds prolonged cold uncomfortable.
Brussels: a city break that can extend to January 3
Winter Wonders is scheduled from November 27, 2026, to January 3, 2027. It suits travellers who prefer an urban festive circuit to moving between several small towns. The practical information includes earlier closing on December 31 and the final day, so do not leave your entire visit until those evenings. Split the walk between daylight and illuminated streets, allowing time for a seated meal and an unhurried journey back. When comparing walking or food tours, examine stops, tastings and actual duration. A commercial tour's itinerary is not the full festival programme. It must explicitly operate on your date; the festival's season alone does not confirm a guide, attraction or tasting will be available.

A manageable route: Prague and Vienna with two hotel bases
For roughly a week between late December and early January, we suggest three nights in Prague and three in Vienna, adjusting the split to your flights. This is an editorial planning idea, not a package or a confirmed train timetable. Move between the cities during a morning or midday and keep the rest of that day light. You can then enjoy Prague's markets before travelling towards Schönbrunn without relying on one tightly scheduled evening. We would not add Colmar or Brussels to the same route. Salzburg could replace a base if it fits your interests better; an extra hotel change often uses the time you wanted for strolling. Check exact connections, luggage arrangements and change conditions before buying transport.
Hotels, tours and budget: pay for a useful service
Compare the total for your party: accommodation, transport, meals and one chosen activity. After Christmas does not automatically mean cheaper or quieter, so do not build a budget around that assumption. A hotel with straightforward transport and suitable arrival arrangements may be more useful than a low headline rate far from your route. Assess tours by what they solve: language, context, transfers or clearly described tastings. Keep an indoor alternative for rain or tiredness and read cancellation terms and meeting details before paying. Recheck official calendars close to departure because organisers can make changes. Book the service described, without treating festive lighting or promotional photographs as a guarantee of snow, particular stalls or included admission.

Frequently asked questions
Which markets are still open in January 2027?
The two named Prague markets, Vienna's Schönbrunn and Salzburg's Stern run until January 6; Brussels' Winter Wonders runs until January 3. Check the exact hours for your visit.
Does open after Christmas mean open on Christmas Day?
No. A season's date range and holiday opening exceptions are separate details. Check the specific market and any additional service you plan to use.
Do all Vienna Christmas markets continue into January?
No. Schönbrunn continues, but Rathausplatz ends on December 26 and Karlsplatz on December 23. An attraction that remains open does not automatically extend nearby stalls.
Should I visit all five cities in a week?
We would not recommend it for a relaxed market trip. Pick a region and one or two bases; our suggested combination uses Prague and Vienna without adding western destinations.
